One-Bedroom Apartment, Central Paris
Our findings
• A dark and cluttered apartment, with an impractical kitchen. Poor use of the space overall.
One-bedroom appartment, Paris
Our objective
• Open up the internal space, create a better sense of flow and provide clearer separation between private rooms and areas for socialising.
• Optimise storage space.
One-bedroom appartment, Paris
Overall strategy
• Make the most out of the apartment’s ground floor location to give it more of a « house » feel, better capture the outside light, and maximise vertical storage to free up floor space.
Chosen solutions
• Closing off the entrance from the main building and using the doors out to the garden as the sole entrance; reopening an old high window over the garden; building a tall cabinet under the window, painted white to diffuse light towards the ceiling, and separating the kitchen area from the living room area.
.
• Replacing the swinging door between the two rooms with a floor-to-ceiling sliding door so it can be kept open, to make the most of the apartment’s double aspect.
.
• Adding tall cupboards in the kitchen and bedroom for extra storage.
• In the bedroom, privatising the sleeping area by changing its position and creating a headboard unit.
